Post subject: Fish & numbers
Ok, I have wondered this for awhile and it's probably a dumb question but what does the #'s ie: L90 for a fish mean? I have seen other ones but cannot remember them.

the L numbering system is used only for loricariidae catfish (think plec types, and was first brought into use by the germans) the reason the L number system is used by people is so that everybody knows exactly which plec type we are talking about, as each sub species has its own number, as common names are not quite as common as people think, as depending on where abouts in the world you hail from, can also depend on which common name is used (got very confusing ) also you had & still do some lfs giving them their own version of a common name
also the L numbers are used for an exact location that a particular species comes from, for example ok then i will use a species that we all know L018, L081, L085 and L177 are also known as gold nuggets but are not the same they look very similar for instance the L018/L085 grows to about 14" and is found in the Rio Xingu` at altameria
where as the L081 grows to about 7" and is found in the Rio Xingu` south of altameria so that is why they are given different L numbers as the area and the size of the fish are different
so this is why we have the L number system in place, hope this helps

I came acroos a web site that listed all the L-numbers. They also included a pic for nearly every one.

I'm guessing plantecatfish.com
They have a great "Cat-e-Log" - sounds like what you were describing.
And...HA!! As I suspected. It took clunkster no time at all to join in on that one!
I don't know how many people here know it, but clunkster (although he'll be humble about it) is a real Plec expert. You'd be hard pressed to find anyone as well versed in Plecos and the L numbers.
Mpp also has a lot of knowledge in this area - we have two great resources here.

LOL...yes, that's what I was thinking of. Thanks melonhead!
When I went to mpp's, my head was swimming with L-numbers. (no pun intended.) He was rattling them off faster than I could comprehend them all. lol

as gary has stated it could be planet catfish (probably is) but there are a few other sites on the web that have somthing similar unfortunatly not all of them are in english but for my money (and the one i use the most) its got to be planet catfish, they have some very knowledgable members on board as well as some very highly respected catfish experts
thanks for the kind words gary i think [shot]
