On a 72" tank would it be fine to just have 60" of light fixtures?

If you're not planting the tank with live plants, you should be fine.

I have a 48" fixture on my 6' tank and I love the way the corners of the tank get shadowed.

That should be plenty. I have a few friends with 8 foot tanks with only 4 foot lights.

That would depend on what you're doing in the tank. If you have live plants - then you need to consider watts per gallon - not length. Are you going to plant anything?

Probably something tough like Vallisineria (cichlid tank)
