On a 72" tank would it be fine to just have 60" of light fixtures?

If you're not planting the tank with live plants, you should be fine.

I have a 48" fixture on my 6' tank and I love the way the corners of the tank get shadowed. Smile

That should be plenty. I have a few friends with 8 foot tanks with only 4 foot lights.

yes as the people above have said you will be alright with that, but if you want you could put two tubes in and stagger them

That would depend on what you're doing in the tank. If you have live plants - then you need to consider watts per gallon - not length. Are you going to plant anything?
