Hey all. I was told that cichlids in their natural habitat have to defend an area of 4 sq. ft. around their nests to keep predators away from their eggs/babies. Is this true?

I agree with clunkster. I would think it would be closer to one foot from the nest. If the fish had to defend that far away, another predator could easily come in and dine.

I think it depends on the size of the fish partially. Here's an interesting video where some large African cichids take on a terrapin that outweighs the fish by a fairly large margin.

My kribs defend and harass any fish that comes within about a foot and a half of the nest site and they're small cichlids.

Hi funkyj--one foot out from its' nest would be about 4 sq ft because if you figure 1 foot out to the north, south, east, and west, right? To me, this is truely amazing for their size, wow.

I see it as a 1' radius. Not necassarily 4 square feet. North, northwest, northeast, south, southwest, southeast, east and west would be more like 8 square feet. Notice in the vid that mpp posted that they aren't really that far away from the nest when they start to defend it and those are big cichlids.
