Here are some photos of my Discus tank. I'd say it's about 75% the way I want it. I still would like to add a little more wood and replace some of the hornwort with Amazon Swords, but it's getting there.

The first three pics are of my favorite piece of wood. I found it, cleaned it out & cured it myself. It's the diagonal one in the center.

As you can see, it looks like a tree trunk going from the bottom of the tank all the way to the top diagonally.

It's concave - hollowed out like the letter "U" - so I use it to cover my 300w heater.

And here's the tank as it looks right now. Like I said, I'd like to have another Amazon Sword over on the left where the big bunch of horwort is now and a couple more pieces of wood...but it's starting to look ok.

Ideas? Suggestions? Better yet - post your tank pics here, too!

Thanks catfish.

Here's the latest addition...a young White Diamond.

I have the "inside" on some cool Discus about to hit town, so I might be getting another cool one very very soon!

Catfish...Karen...anyone else...how about some new posts with some of your tank pics? I'd love to see them.

Now? Just show. I do entertain thoughts of breeding eventually...but I'd like a bigger tank before I do that. They're in a 55g right now.

i've heard that they're fine in a show tank with just a couple water changes a week, but if you wanted to breed them, thats when you need to do the once a day changes, anyone care to elaborate on this?

Well IME, if you want some big discus you need to feed them a varied diet rich in protien such as beefheart and mysis, bloodworms and a Quality flake or pellet. As far as getting the size desired I raise all my young discus in barebottom tanks and a large water change everyday. Yes everyday. This will get optimal growth and rid your tank of high concentrations of all the bad stuff fish dont like. Just plain clean water.

Type of water I use, aged tap water for young and pre breeders and for adult breeding pairs R/O water with a hardness of 60 to 80 ppm. This will give the male more time to fertilize the eggs before they calcify.

I do all my breeding in a barebottom 29 gallon tank. Only a heater, sponge filter, spawning cone and of course the pair. Water changes heree are also done everyday at a 30% with cooler water. This will induce them to spawn in some cases. They think its rainy season like in the wild or even a weather front will sometimes induce them.

Another thing that is a must prior to breeding is to deworm and treat for any ailmentsyour discus may have. Feedings only happen 2 times a day. Once in the AM and PM. Usually with bloodworms only. The reason for this is it keeps the bio load low and keeps the tank cleaner.

Later tonight I will take a few pics of my breeding tanks and the pairs that I am working with and also some upcoming juveniles.

Awesome info so far.

Thought of you (your discus, really) today as I passed thru Fremont to and from Columbus.

Looking forward to the pics.

My only problem is that I travel on business frequently, so I can pull off 2 changes a week - maybe 3 consistantly. Every day isn't going to happen unless I change jobs.
