I've had to do two coats before - but usually one.
Try this with your aquarium background....
Take it off and coat it with vegitable oil. (yes, seriously)
Put a good coat on...then do the same to the back glass of your tank - being sure not to slop or drip any in it.
Apply the background & use a squeegie or even a good flat spatula to get the bubbles out - works great! I did that on my cheapie blue background for my Discus tank & it looks really nice.

I apply 5 good but thin coats. I hate any light sneaking thru. It seems to do the job great

Melon, I applied the background with a very damp cloth, and then smoothed it out with a tool from the kitchen used to scrape the cutting board--it's a plastic thing with a silicone edge to one side. If any of you are married, your wife may be into Pampered Chef, she may know what this is. It's called a Handy Scraper--I think. Any way, I got it really smooth, no bubbles or anything. It's just not black enough for me. When I went to mpp's house and and saw his tanks that had a painted background, I decided that I'd do the same to mine--I REALLY liked it.

i spray paint all my tanks. i use the rustolieumn krylon gloss enactive finish spray paint. don't know if i spelled that right. i do a light coast and be sure not to spray too long in one spot to avoid clumps. then i spray a few more coats on till i can't see anymore light through it.

Spraying a tank is no problem if the tank is small enough to move in and out of the house. If it's a bigger tank or if it's already stocked the roller is the way to go

I think I prefer painting overall. Only my Discus tank has a stick-on background. I think the black (or blue) looks deeper with paint as well.

Yes, I agree. mpp has a tank with a painted blue background with silica sand that I really liked. Looked super sharp, too. I may mimic that in the hopefully near future.

I can't wait for you to see mine as well. I think you should like it also. Just rock, sand and a painted background
