Hopefully THAT got your attention.
As usual..it's not what you think....but this is kind of cool. As most of you know, I'm on the hunt for a 125/150.
I've always seen cool photos of tanks with brush sticking up out of a planted area or right out of the substrate & thought it was a neat look. And since that's a Discus' natural habitat, I'm planning on having a lot of driftwood & branches in the tank.
The problem becomes having control over what the layout looks like. You can lean wood against the side of the tank (like in my current tank) or make a brush-pile & let them fall where the may...but I wanted to be able to control which way they sit etc.
So I got to thinking about ways to weigh driftwood down. I'd seen pieces screwed into slate & I hear it's safe. But what about pieces that are to narrow to hold screws?
So I came across some spawning slates I'd made a while back and figured out an alternate use for them. Laid on their faces, I decided to adapt them into a driftwood holder that I could then cover with substrate.
So here's what I did...
Here are the two pieces of wood that I want to have sticking up out of the substrate like brush. They are 22" and 24" long
Using the wet saw I used to make the slates, I cut a few more pieces...and siliconed the hell out of them since they'll be holding quite a bit of weight...
And they seem to work great...
Now I can set them up in the new tank, cover them with substrate & I have some cool looking brush.
