What kind of HOBs are on the tank? You had said cartridges, they're the Bio-Wheels? If it were me, I would try a little test on the tank. Instead of tossing out cartridges every two weeks, try cutting them open and dumping out all of the charcoal and then put them (cartridges) back into the filters. That way, more nitrifying bacteria can build and keep growing instead of having to regenerate itself every two weeks.

I have done this with my Bio-Wheel and Whisper (I later put in AquaClear filter media in both filters).

Sorry, it's been up nearly a month. AnneRicebowl came over tonight. She saw it... it's just remains cloudy. I did a 40% water change on it 2 days ago. And yesterday it was back to cloudy again. It's the darnedest thing.

Are you sure the tank has cycled ? sounds as though it is spike'ng

I've been measuring it and no discernable spikes. Nitrate goes up every once in a while but I kind of expect that for a tank filled with BN juvies. Haven't had any of the babies die and they're usually more susceptible to poor water quality. I'll grab a few pics in a moment and post them.

My old cory tank did the same thing - no measurable spikes but had a temporary cloudy period that I couldn't account for. I eventually chalked it up to a bacterial bloom, kept up the maintenence & it disappeared.

Makes me wonder if there is some thing in the tank that you dont know about that is afecting it. The main thing that i would associate with cloudy water is overfeeding, but i very much doubt that you would. Silly dam question but i notice the tanks substrate is sand, did you rinse it first ? Have you tried using fillter wool to help "polish" the water ?

That's a good thought on the filter wool... I'll give it a go. I don't think it's overfeeding as I toss in a slice of washed fresh zuchini every couple of days after they've devoured the previous. Just across the aisle where my albino's are in another 20, they get the same treatment, same food, same amounts and crystal clear.

I did another 40% water change and then I ran a micron cartridge (for polishing) in my Magnum 350 all night in that 20 and the dang thing is still cloudy. I'll keep it going and see how it goes but I was really hoping for some clear water this morning when I got up to check.

I got a chance to see Mike's fish room this weekend. Quite the sight to behold. It looks really nice...except for that one cloudy tank. Laughing

Seriously though - it looks just like my cory tank did way back. I never could figure out the cause. The good news is it went away overnight eventually.

And since your BN in it all appear healthy & energetic - I'd say that's a decent sign.

You're welcome Gary. I got another 5 tanks up this weekend along with cleaning the others. two 10's another 20 and two 29's, slowly but surely I'm getting there. I spent quite a bit of time this weekend tearing down the veggie garden and the subsequent clean up... one less thing!
Hopefully, I can completely "unwreck" the room and snooker room and have everyone over for a swap soon.
