An identification challenge...

Clunkster, funky, mpp...anyone else....

I bought these two guys today - couldn't resist them. Let's see if you know what they are...

Couple hints...

They're tiny - just 2.2" to 4" full grown
They're peaceful
They're hiders

Guesses?

I know I 've seen these before! I just don't remember where.
Pseudomystus sp. or maybe Microglanis sp? How about an origin there Gary?

Mpp your not far off as i would say think they are Pseudomystus leiacanthus, one of the asian bumble bee catfish.
By the way gary hope you like your photos as that is what you will have to look at most of the time to see them Laughing As they are very nocturnal and love to hide, i have some in one of my tanks and i cant get pics of them for love nor money Evil or Very Mad

Well no - but both of you made really good guesses.

Not Asian. South American. It's Microglanis iheringi.

And clunkster - that's why I took pics of them bagged. I was told they're nocturnal and shy. But they were such cool looking little spuds I couldn't resist.

I was also looking at the barbels and I had considered Microglanis iheringi but ruled it out because of the caudal coloration, and what looked like differences in the adipose and dorsal fins. The adipose fins on your specimens look less pronounced whereas the dorsal is apparently bigger. Also the barbels for the species you mentioned are relatively small compared to the ones clunk and I thought it might be. I almost cited the same species that clunk did but shied away because of what appeared to be significant color differences although the morphology seemed perfect. I was thinking, prehaps erroneously, that your fish, under stress from handling would darken in response. I chose the genus because of the morphology but couldn't find what I would consider an exact match. Of course there are about 2000 species of cats around the world. I initially thought it looked North American and considered the madtoms and stone cats because of the size, but those were immediately ruled out for morphology.
just some thoughts

I would say that the fish will, once settled in your tank revert to a "normal" colouration, personaly i think the colour they are showing in the bag is a stress colouration, which is why going by the body of the fish is why i suggested the species that i did.

Shocked

Umm...ok. You guys left me waaaaaaaay back there. Laughing

But based on the pics - you both pretty much got as close as you can get on the first try.

I just thought it'd be fun - since for once I knew the answer and you had to guess. Twisted Evil

You know asking me about ANY catfish I don't own is a complete waste of time, right? And...asking me about ones I DO own can be iffy too.

Why are you so certain on the identification ? Is it because that is what you were told by an lfs ? Remember they can and do get the names wrong at times, as a prime example is you will often see corydoras trilineatus mis-sold/mis-labbled as c.julii. Also remember the L number that you were sold as something else.

Just because it say's Oxo on buss'es dose'nt mean they sell it !
Myself and mpp have both gone by body shape, barbles, finshape and not by a name as supplied by somebody else.

Oh clunkster. Not ready to be 90% right huh? Rolling Eyes Mpp can eventually come see them in person - but at some point you're going to have to trust that the only guy who can see them in person right now found two links that look identical to what my fish look like. (See above)

Yeah - I made a mistake on an L number.....ONCE. And I didn't get it from someone who was certain. And I never claimed to be certain or an expert. That means I'll never get one right EVER?

Send me a PC link or something that has a pic of my fish that's not a Microglanis iheringi. I'll admit it if the chain store, my two links, and I are wrong.

Yes i appreciate that you can see the fish in person, (if you know where they hide) and that means you see how they look, but remember all fish in pics look differant in real life. Which is why i will look at the body, head, finrays, barbel etc etc, and that is what i based my identification on, and no i am not claiming to be 100% right as i am not that good.
This is one of the reasons that the L & C numbering classifications are in use, as a lot of catfish familys have genus which are very much alike, so if you dont have a catch location it can be very hard to give the fish its correct name, so this is where the bodyshape/size etc etc can help.
So if i have got it wrong then i have got it wrong, but i can only go by what i see in a picture, as unlike you, who can see the actual fish.
