Sorry to hear about that.
Would a battery powered air pump just to keep the water oxygenated have helped? I have an extra desktop UPS I'm going to put under my new tank just because I have it laying around, to keep the filter going if power ever goes out, but it has never gone out in our neighborhood in the three years I've been here so it might be overkill.

Or maybe a small generator to power just the tanks especially if power outages are frequent in your area.
