Hey all, Last night I picked up a South American Bumblebee Catfish. He is so neat. He's an almost bright pink with bumbebee markings all down his back. Does anyone know more about this little guy. I love cats but I don't have big enough tanks for most but this guy is only supposed to get 5 inches (thats what the placard on the front of the tank said anyway Wink) Thanks!

Well this species is certainly not pink but it's a South Am. bumblebee cat. How does this compare to your fish? Close?

I have three S. American bumblebees. Mike's right - they're not pink. In fact - the colors on the pic mike linked to are a bit bleached out. They're actually chocolate brownish with blotches. Also..they only get 2" to 3" long. Is it possible whover sold it to you may have mis-identified it?

At any rate...I love mine. I have them in my 150 gal angelfish tank. I rarely see them till after dark when my blue moonlight lights are on. They're VERY nocturnal and very shy during day hours. I probably didn't see mine for a good month after I put them in. They went stratight under the wood & hid.

I couldn't sleep last night so I went down to watch my plecs eat in the blue light about 1:30am...and there were the bumblebees...active as all getout...right in front.

Someone help me out...There is a very similar catfish...maybe asian (?) that is often confused for the S. American. Mike???

Hi Gary,
I think this is the one you're speaking of.

yeah - I think so...but it still doesn't look pink. Hmmm..

I believe the 5.5 inches is about right on that one, though.

The first picture of the S.A. Bumblebee catfish is definitely just like mine except for the lack of silver coloring on the one I have. Mine is about 3 inches in length. I will get out my camera tomorrow and get a picture of him. He is definitely a pinkish-salmon color. Hmmmm......

Interesting how different species have unexpected similarities. These bumble bee catfish remind me of Belted Galloways (Oreo Cows)

My husband first saw them in a field off of Hwy 29 near Eau Claire. He didnt know what they were and said they looked like giant bumble bees.

Re the Belted galloways you find them in scotland quite a bit Wink
