Post subject: Hard water stains on tank interior - Help???
I have a gorgeous 150 show that I picked up used. It's probably 3 or 4 years old. Omaha has pretty hard water and although I keep a very clean tank, I have whiteish scummy hard water stains on the inside of my tank. It's less noticeable when the water is all the way to the top, but it's there.
I use a magnet at least weekly and have tried scraping with blades...but the stains are still there. Below is a pic I took this morning during a large water change. Any hints or tips? This is REALLY starting to annoy me.

Do not use any blades on glass as this will scratch the glass which will look a lot worse than the stains. Dont know if you can get sponge pads with a rough side, over on your side of the pond, but i would use one if i was you as you will find they work a treat, at cleaning the inside of your tank a lot better than a magnet in my humble opinion. let us know how you get on

I've tried scouring pads...and I have scraped with blades...doesn't touch it. A guy on a nother forum suggested I drain it - move the discus - scrub it with muratic acid and then fill the whole thing again. Sounds like a horrible project to me.

Also very time consuming, plus you will need to make sure that the tank is very well rinsed out

I use a rough sponge (i have used the sponge that covers a magnum canister filter before). I usually scrub the glass when it is still full of water, so the window scum can come off more easily, and than I do a water change. It is a pain.

I've tried one..still not getting it. Maybe I need to go sponge shopping & look at alternatives again.

Getting closer...but it's on the inside of the tank. Six discus and three plecs live in it.

it's to late now, since you have fish in there...
but... wouldn't it probably be a calcium deposit? so use some sort of acid? vinegar, lemon juice...
or I found an article on google...

Yep. All those would probably work...but it's interior glass. I've resigned to the fact that I'll have to have an alternate place for the fish for a day or two while I scrub it out & clean it good.
Or I could just buy a new, bigger tank.
