Post subject: LOTS of overdue Discus pics.
Ok...so I've not been on my own board much lately. Work has been so demanding, I've really not even seen my family much. So I thought it was time I caught up on some Discus pics.
As you may know, I had my 150 show full of 10 Discus a while back - and for whatever stupid reason - got rid of them and tried a few different things with the tank...none of which "did it" for me like the Discus did.
So a month or so ago, I started re-collecting some Discus and I am LOVING it. I started with two and am now up to seven. More to come soon, too.
Here's my latest addition...a nice little female White Diamond:
Then there's the Blue Diamond - one of the first two I started my new collection with. I'm not the biggest Blue Diamond fan, but I think this one is gorgeous. It's a little female.
The other fish I re-started with was this male Melon:
Then there's the Red Dragon. Every tank with cichlids in it has at least one tank butthole. That's this guy - harasses everyone. Not sure of (his) sex.
This Turk is the most shy fish in the tank so he's really hard to get pictures of. Just recently, he's started coming out more & fighting back...so hopefully better pics coming as the shyness wears off more.
I call this one Brilliant Blue - which is one of several names you see attached to this kind. The other most common thing you'll find it under online is a Cobalt Blue - but I call it Brilliant Blue. Beautiful fish - also unsure of the sex.
Then there's my snooty fish. I say that because it's a Tony Tan (sp?) and perfect in pretty much every way. It's the nicest Leopard Snakeskin I've ever seen in person & I've been told by others it's likely show quality. I'll pass on the show thing & just enjoy it here...unsure of the sex although we suspect it's a female.
And here are some random/group shots....
See my Gold Nugget in the back there?
Anyway - I'm loving having Discus back in the house. They really are such enjoyable fish with nice personalities. These are all young, smaller fish - so I'll be able to grow the whole group up together. More pics as I add more fish - hopefully soon.
Gerat pics again! I really like the brilliant/cobalt blue!

Great looking fish! I just recently acquired my first discus which is a blue snakeskin. It doesn't look anywhere near as nice as yours though. How can you sex them?

It is not easy to sex discus, as there are no obvious differences, you really need them to spawn, so as to see the breeding tubes, it is pointed on the male and rounded on the female

And thats the price we have too pay for the fish we like and keep, your best chance of getting a pair is to buy about 6 and see if any pair up

Pffft. With the adult size of some of my fish pushing 12+" its hard to get 6 of all the fish I want to spawn.

Clunk is right
The only predictable way is when the tubes drop. Some people can pick M's and F's within a strain by shape - but not consistantly that I've seen.
In a group of the same age the males will be obviously bigger, but again that's hit & miss since you really don't know who is what age unless you hatched them yourself.
