well a lot of the fish that are offered for sale in the lfs are man made as most of the finnage and colour is very different in the wild, mind you some fish look the better for it. The one i cant understand though is the albino krib ! WHY ? One of the reasons this fish is popular is its colouration. Also have got nothing too like about died or tattoed fish Evil or Very Mad

I'm pretty versed with bettas, mind you that I spawned them when I was a teenager and the coolest betta to have was the double tail. Now there are so many different types it's crazy. There are 2 types of bettas I have and will always like, black bettas and cambodian bettas.

Cool. Cool DTs never caught my eye, but the HMPK, CTHMPK, and PK I love. My favorite colors are coppers, copper golds, and most masks.

I really like that discus that's almost black!

Anne, the discus is dark because it it either very sick or the water conditions do not suit discus.
To be honest most of the discus in the photos look like culls to me. The only one with a chance would be the Melon. One thing to look out for when selecting a discus is the shape and size of the eye in relation to it's head. A rough guide to judge the correct eye size, is that if you draw a vertical line down through the eye, you should be able to get 5 to 7 eye diameter on that line. If you look at all but the melon in the photos, you will see that the fish are badly stunted.
Unfortunatley, to the normal fish keeper who does not 'know' discus, you will be palmed off with these culls by your lfs's. Sites like

have sponsors that are both in the UK and USA who can ship you excellent high quality fish for a fraction of what you probably paid.

At the end of the day we all love the fish we have whether they be show winners or not, but please do not get lfs discus.

Funny, I paid $15 +/- for my discus. BTW, I work for the lfs. So before you come on here as a noob and start judging other peoples fish, you might want to make friends first. OK pumpkin? Wink

Also odd that you ASSume that the water conditions are wrong. The gh is 4 degrees, the kh is 3 degrees and the ph is 6.8

Sorry, but I tell it like it is, the fish are stunted.

Water conditions in lfs's are renound to be unreasonable for discus at the best of times. I have always checked the water from my local shops and they suck big time.
The trouble is, is that lfs's buy in discus, and because they do not always sell right away (because of their 'hard to keep' reputation) stunting can happen so quickly. A young discus must have daily water changes to grow properly. This being time consuming for the lfs will not happen, and the fish stunts. Big eyes in relation to the body as well as rugby ball shapes are the classic signs.

I have bought lfs fish in the past, I even won a 3rd place in the UK show with a lfs discus. Starting with good stock is a must though, and if I can advise people to buy from reputable 'discus breeders/importers' then the hobby of keeping them will improve and you will enjoy the fish more.

I mean no disrespect to anyone here, so please do not think I am wading in with both feet in my mouth Very Happy I want to help, but to do this sometimes truths/facts have to be expressed.
