I think the plant I have in my aquarium is horwort - and what I am trying to figure out is - does it grow on it's own and is there a good way to weed it out - I am sure it is growing, which I wasn't expecting and I noticed last night that it appears to be taking over about 1/2 of my tank?
thanks

Hornwort can be anchored down, or it can be left floating. It will grow best if it's left to float on it's own.

. Also, if there are little to no nitrates in the tank and/or under high light, the ends will turn a pink-red color.

I am almost positive this is hornwort just because I remember reading somewhere on her that it was a good plant for livebearers - my question is about weeding it - do I just pull some out or is there something specific that I am supposed do to thin it down - and is it common that it is growing so much that it is almost overtaking my tank?
thank you.

Just pull out whatever you don't want, either by cutting the stems with scissors or with your fingernails or by removing individual plants. Any healthy plant that's grows by spreading out. For example, I had Vallisneria spiralis in my 30 gallon long, which is a 3 foot long tank, and within just a few months, it took over 1/2 my tank. Now, I have dwarf sag, and it's doing the same as the V. spiralis. I've also had the same expierence with hornwort as you have. So, it's completely possible that it can take over a tank.

If you are local and want to get rid of what you don't want, i'll gladly take it off your hands. My crays need some more hiding places. Wink

are you here in Omaha, NE? If so you are more than welcome to it, the sooner the better, I thinned it out last night and it is taking almost a full half gallon of a jug
