Post subject: Community tank help
I'm setting up a community tank 29 gallons.
I have a couple cory cats and various tetras. I would like to have some larger fish in the tank.
What is the largest/neatest looking fish that I can put with tetras & corys that won't hurt them? Some king of gourami? Barbs? I am open to suggestions.
Thanks.

My two cents is forget the barbs & go with a smaller variety of gourami.
I like barbs, but some get big and can get aggressive toward tetras and small fish.
Any dawrf gourami would work fine. I might also suggest a gold gourami. They can get a bit bigger, but they're really cool looking - have almost a leopard skin pattern on them.
I've read reports of them being aggressive toward other fish, but I had two in a community tank and the only fish they hassled was each other. And that wasn't really even a serious problem.
Just a thought. Keep us posted!

Great. I was kind of hoping to get some advice on gouramis. Have always thought they were cool.
Thank you

I agree with Melonhead, barbs can get nasty...... especially, tiger barbs. I avoid them at all costs. However, I love cherry barbs..... they are colorful and I've never had any issues with them. Dwarf gouramis are a good choice for a larger fish, but don't over do it with your stocking level. Over-crowding is the biggest crulprit for aggressiveness, and illness, IME.

When we had a community tank, we had really good luck with Rainbows. There are about 10 different kinds that you should be able to get pretty easily. They are very active and VERY hardy for a new tank.

Raindbows and gouramis would look nice in a tank that size, anythingelse is either too small or aggressive and need different setups.
